The Slovak audience simply loves the Kabát band. It’s mutual because they always like to come back to us. “We started at a time when our countries were united. It was called Czechoslovakia-Slovakia, I am proud of it. I am still proud and we are all Czechoslovaks. And that’s why we don’t consider Slovakia a foreign country. I think that you can recognize that in that band as well, and that’s why the fans like us. We are not a foreign band,” declared leader Pepa Vojtek.
The story of the band began in 1983 in Teplice. A legend grew out of the local group, which today ranks among the most successful bands in the history of Czech-Slovak music. They have twelve studio albums, numerous awards, including the Czech Nightingale and the Angel awards.
Looking back, did they think at the time that they would one day be among the greatest rock bands? “We are boys growing up in socialism. Back then, our generation, before we were teenagers, we didn’t have much self-confidence. Today’s youth have more self-confidence, even if sometimes unfounded. More self-confidence than talent,” said Ota Váňa in an interview with Teri Čikoš.
“So we were a bit of a downtrodden generation. Anyone who remembers it will definitely agree with me. And that’s why we appreciate every step up we’ve taken. There were different goals in our career. For example, the first sold out Lucerna. The Prague Lantern has always been a cult hall. And then we gradually went up until we went to winter stadiums, football stadiums. And we appreciate every success. Also the fact that people still come to us. We are able to go as one of the few tours of 20 winter stadiums. It’s just amazing. So we really appreciate this,” added the musician.
How do they view today’s rock music scene and trends? What made them last so long as a band? What will their tour entail? You will find out in the interview in the VIDEO at the beginning of the article!
