First lady addressed the concept of machosphere during meeting of the Three Powers on combating feminicide
First Lady Janja da Silva asked those present at an event at Palácio do Planalto this Wednesday (May 20, 2026) who knew what it is “red pill”. She took advantage of the meeting to explain how the phenomenon fuels violence against women.
The event marks 100 days of to Combat Feminicide. Janja opened his speech by remembering dead women – he mentioned the names of victims from different states – and argued that the issue cannot be politically exploited. “It cannot be treated as a matter of political dispute”said the first lady.
He then turned to the audience and asked how many there knew what red pill. He then went on to explain the concept and recommended the documentary Inside the Machosphere (2026) as material for those who want to understand the discourse that, according to her, spreads misinformation about women on social media. She stated that she watched the work with the president (PT).
“We call this concept machosphere”Janja said, describing how misogynistic narratives disguise themselves as entertainment to reach young people on TikTok and other digital platforms.
The first lady warned that violent content on the internet is not harmless. “It gives me nightmares”he stated, when talking about the impact of the digital environment on the spread of aggressive behavior, especially among young men.
Janja concluded by defending the joint role of the three powers in protecting women. “Women’s lives matter; they matter in laws, in rights, in public policies, in court decisions.”
