has once again turned the helm in full tension with its European allies. Just a week after canceling the sending of American troops to Poland, the president of the United States announced this Thursday the deployment of 5,000 additional soldiers on Polish territory.
And he did so, furthermore, directly linking the decision to the conservative president of Poland, one of the European leaders closest to the Republican president.
“I am pleased to announce that we will send 5,000 additional troops to Poland”Trump wrote in Truth Social, where he explained that the measure comes after the “successful election” of Nawrocki and because of the relationship he has with him.
The movement represents a new turn of the White House in the midst of a crisis with several NATO partners due to the war with Iran and the role that some European countries are playing in the Middle East.
From withdrawal to new deployment
The announcement comes after especially tense weeks within the Atlantic alliance.
Just a few days ago, the Pentagon He confirmed that he had canceled the deployment of an armored brigade of more than 4,000 soldiers that was supposed to go precisely to Poland.
That decision was interpreted as part of the political punishment of Trump to several European allies for refusing to become militarily involved in the conflict with Iran and in the operation to guarantee the security of the Strait of Hormuz.
The tension was even greater after threats to reduce the US military presence in Germany.
At the beginning of May, Trump announced the withdrawal of 5,000 troops from the country after statements by the German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz, criticizing Washington’s strategy regarding Iran.
Now, however, the White House once again reinforces NATO’s eastern flank.
Rubio points directly to Spain
The new deployment also coincides with the meeting of NATO foreign ministers taking place this Thursday and Friday in Swedenmarked precisely by doubts about the US military commitment in Europa.
And there the direct criticisms of Washington against some allies.
Before taking off for Sweden, the Secretary of State, Marco Rubioassured that Trump is “very upset” with the position of several European partners regarding Iran, including Spain.
“NATO is good for the United States because it provides us with bases in the region that allow us to project power in the Middle East,” Rubio told reporters.
And he issued a particularly harsh warning:
“If member countries like Spain deny us the use of these bases, why are we still in NATO? We have to talk about that.”
Poland, Trump’s great European ally
In the midst of this growing clash with part of Western Europe, Poland has become one of Trump’s main political partners within the continent.
Karol Nawrocki, president since August last yearmaintains a very close line to Washington and has reinforced the security and rearmament discourse against Russia.
That is why Trump’s announcement also has an enormous political charge.
While it threatens to reduce military presence in some European countries, it reinforces precisely the ally most aligned with its international vision.
