Cubans protest at the US embassy in Havana after Raúl Castro’s indictment

HAVANA, May 22 (Reuters) – Thousands of Cubans gathered on Friday in front of the US embassy in Havana to protest the US decision to indict former leader Raúl Castro for the downing of two civilian planes 30 years ago.

The pro-government demonstration, which began shortly after dawn on the Havana waterfront, comes at a time when Cuban authorities have come together this week in support of the island’s former president and revolutionary hero.

Cuba says Castro’s indictment on murder charges on Wednesday was based on ‘spurious’ allegations designed to serve as a pretext to invade the nation amid a Trump administration effort to overthrow the island’s government.
