Revenue will pay R$16 billion in the largest batch of refunds in history

Payment includes the first batch of the 2026 Individual Income Tax Declaration and residual refunds from previous years

The Federal Revenue on Friday (May 22, 2026) consulted the largest batch of IR (Income Tax) refunds in history. A total of 8,749,992 taxpayers will receive R$16 billion. The payment includes the first batch of the 2026 Individual Income Tax Declaration and residual refunds from previous years.

In a note, the Tax Authority informed that the record batch is due to the agility in processing declarations and the advancement of modernization and automation tools adopted by the agency.

The agency reported that the first batch of 2026 represents 40% of the refunds scheduled to be paid this year, both in values and number of taxpayers. Of the R$16 billion in this batch, R$8.64 billion will go to taxpayers with legal priority for reimbursement.

Refunds are distributed as follows:

  • 4,959,431 taxpayers who used the pre-filled declaration and/or simultaneously chose to receive the refund via Pix (priority not determined by law);
  • 2,256,975 taxpayers aged 60 to 79 (legal priority);
  • 1,054,789 taxpayers whose largest source of income is teaching (legal priority);
  • 256,697 taxpayers over 80 years of age (legal priority);
  • 222,100 taxpayers with physical or mental disabilities or serious illness (legal priority).

In this batch, there will be no payment to taxpayers without priority.

The query can be made on the Federal Revenue website. The taxpayer simply clicks on “My Income Tax” and then on the “Consult Refund” button. It is also possible to consult the Federal Revenue app for tablets and smartphones.

The previous record had been recorded in the first batch of 2025, which included credits of R$11 billion for 6.2 million taxpayers. This year, the IRS reduced the number of regular batches of declaration refunds from five to four, with payments at the end of May, June, July and August.

PAYMENT

Payment will be made on May 29, the last day for submitting this year’s declarations, to the account or CPF-type Pix key informed in the Income Tax declaration.

If the taxpayer is not on the list, he must enter the e-CAC (Virtual Taxpayer Service Center) and obtain the declaration extract. If you verify a pending issue, you can send a rectifying statement and wait for the next batches.

If, for any reason, the refund is not deposited in the account informed in the declaration, as in the case of a deactivated account, the amounts will be available for redemption for up to one year at Banco do Brasil.

In this case, the citizen will be able to schedule credit in any bank account in their name, through the BB Portal or by calling the bank’s Relationship Center, on telephone numbers 4004-0001 (capitals), 0800-729-0001 (other locations) and 0800-729-0088 (special telephone number exclusively for the hearing impaired).

If the taxpayer does not redeem the amount of their refund after one year, they must request the amount on the e-CAC Portal. When entering the page, the citizen must access the “Declarations and Statements” menu, click on “My Income Tax” and then in the “Request refund not redeemed in the banking network” field.
