400,000 – this number has been the benchmark in German residential construction since 2021. The future Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had promised during the election campaign that he would create this number of new residential units every year. Scholz’s confidant Klara Geywitz then became construction minister – and failed year after year to meet the requirement.
