According to American sources, the US framework agreement with Iran is almost complete. Tehran agrees with it in principle, but Trump keeps a few more days for the successful completion of the negotiations.
The framework agreement between the United States and Iran is “95 percent complete,” Fox News reported Sunday, citing its sources. According to them, Tehran agreed to the agreement in principle, writes TASR.
“We don’t have a deal yet. We’re not going to sign it today (Sunday) or tomorrow,” an unnamed US administration official said, adding that President Donald Trump wanted to “give (Iran) another five, six or seven days” to successfully complete the negotiations.
Negotiations on the nuclear program
“We have an agreement on (Iran’s) nuclear stockpile and the Strait of Hormuz, but we are still negotiating the wording,” a US government official said. At the same time, he repeated Trump’s words about the possibility of resuming strikes on Iran. “We will certainly not make a bad deal. We have other options and may resume military strikes if a deal is not reached,” he said.
The US president announced on Sunday that he had ordered his negotiators to take their time in negotiating the Iran deal. According to him, Tehran must understand that it cannot acquire a nuclear weapon.
Support and ceasefire
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told The New York Times (NYT) on Sunday that the agreement with Iran has gained support in the region, but an agreement on Tehran’s nuclear program cannot be reached in 72 hours.
Axios reported that a possible deal would extend the ceasefire by 60 days, during which the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened, Iran could sell oil and the two sides would hold talks on its nuclear program.
