Tebet says the end of 6 X 1 will not harm companies

Former minister states that the end of the scale is “reality” and defends compensation for the most affected sectors

The former Minister of Planning and Budget (PSB) stated on Monday (May 25, 2026) that the end of the 6 X 1 scale “It’s reality and there’s no going back”. The statement was made at an event promoted by Rights Já! Forum for Democracy, in São Paulo.

Tebet said that, when he was still in government, he asked the Institute for Applied Economic Research to carry out a study on the impacts of changing working hours. According to her, the survey would still need to be complemented with data on small traders and service providers, but it already indicates that the measure would not lead to widespread damage to the productive sector.

“Brazil will not fail, the productive sector will not fail with the end of the 6 X 1 scale”he declared. “It’s obvious that we have some sectors that require attention. And this attention will happen”he stated.

Tebet’s speech took place on the day that the special commission that analyzes the Proposed Amendment to the Constitution of the proposal’s 6 X 1 scale. The request for review was presented by the deputy (PL-RS). The discussion will resume on Wednesday (May 27). As it is a PEC, it needs at least 308 votes in 2 rounds in the Chamber.

The deputy’s report (Republicanos-BA) establishes the constitutional right to 2 days of rest per week and without salary reduction. The text establishes a transition: 60 days after enactment, the maximum working hours would fall from 44 to 42 hours per week. It would come into effect 14 months after the publication of the amendment.

Tebet stated that some sectors will have to receive specific treatment. According to her, micro and small entrepreneurs, especially traders and service providers with few employees, “you can feel” plus the effects of the measure. In these cases, according to the former minister, the State and Congress will have to formulate compensation mechanisms.

“This requires care. And this care, which is part of democracy, the Executive and the National Congress will provide the appropriate responses”he stated. “It is important that it happens immediately, even if part of it is postponed to 2027”these.

The former minister compared the processing of the proposal to the process of approving tax reform. He declared that, if the end of the 6 X 1 scale is approved, it will be an achievement shared between different parties and congressmen.

“It will not have the stamp of just one party or just one candidate. It will be the victory of the Brazilian people and will be recognized by society as a project in which the finger, the hand, the heart, the work of the entire National Congress was involved, as was the tax reform”these.

Tebet stated that the Chamber “you will benefit” politically if it leads to a vote on the proposal. According to her, the president of the House, (Republicanos-PB), took over the agenda by saying that the issue would be addressed by Congress.

“I see this project very similar to the tax reform project. The National Congress said: ‘Leave it to me'”these. “But, again, with rationality, without a hobby horse. The productive sector does not need to worry”he declared.
