It would be very naive to believe that Flávio Bolsonaro’s meeting with US President Donald Trump will bring votes for the senator. In fact, Flávio Bolsonaro went to the USA to take a photo with Donald Trump and “look good in the photo”.
Here, “looking good in the photo” has a double objective. The first is to generate a factoid capable of diverting the attention of the media and social networks to the meeting with Trump, and no longer to the conversation with Daniel Vorcaro. After all, Flávio Bolsonaro managed to meet at the last minute, impromptu, with the US president. This is no small feat.
The second objective of the meeting is to show that Flávio Bolsonaro is still alive and strong in the electoral campaign, especially for his base. Taking a photo with Trump has symbolic value, it demonstrates strength, since he is standing next to a powerful person and icon of the American right today.
From the point of view of electoral marketing, Flávio Bolsonaro’s strategy was correct – especially because the senator is not dead electorally. According to the latest Nexus/BTG survey, Flávio Bolsonaro would have 43% of voting intentions, while Lula, 47%. Technically, taking into account the margin of error, they are tied. It is a perfectly reversible scenario for the PL senator.
The first step towards trying to turn the game around has been taken. Now all that remains is to better articulate communication with members of your own party. There’s no point in a nice photo with Trump if you butt heads with Mário Frias or Valdemar Costa Neto.
