Michael Valgren won the hilly 17th stage over 3,200 meters in the 109th Giro d’Italia as an outlier in sometimes heavy rain and hail. After 202 kilometers in the hinterland of Lake Garda with many small climbs and a tough uphill section, the 34-year-old Dane from the EF Education-EasyPost team came out on top ahead of the Norwegian Andreas Leknessund (Uno-X Mobility) and the Italian Damiano Caruso (Bahrain Victorious). One kilometer from the finish, Valgren launched the decisive attack from a group of six. Leknessund came second for the third time in this year’s Tour of Italy.
