President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT) said this Wednesday (27) that the federal government is prepared to respond to the possible effects of , a meteorological phenomenon that alters rainfall patterns.
“We know that nature is often uncontrollable, but we are prepared, structured with everything necessary to face a crisis caused by El Niño”, declared Lula in an interview with Rede Amazônica, a Globo affiliate in Amazonas.
The PT member also criticized the previous government, without mentioning the former president (PL) by name. “When we entered [no poder em 2023] We were not prepared because the government was dismantled”, declared Lula.
The issue of El Nino is especially sensitive in the state because when there are very severe droughts the level of the Amazon River drops and river navigation is compromised. When this happens, both the capital Manaus and other cities can become isolated.
On Monday (25), the minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) determined that the Lula administration and the states of the Amazon and Pantanal to avoid and contain forest fires in these biomes.
Experts’ analysis is that El Niño will increase summer temperatures in Brazil.
In the interview, Lula stated that he is unlocking the works on BR-319. The road, which connects Manaus to Porto Velho (RO), has sections without asphalt. The asphalting of the highway is criticized by environmentalists, who fear that deforestation in the Amazon will be facilitated. The PT member states that the works will be carried out with environmental care.
The president also stated that the capital Amazon needs to be connected by land to other locations. “It doesn’t make sense for cities not to be able to communicate, to depend on the river which, when it dries up, is unable to provide the necessary transport,” he declared.
