Hungarian MPs can lose thousands of euros per month. Tisza suggested cutting salaries and benefits

The Hungarian Tisza proposes a reduction in the salaries of MPs and the allowances for positions. The average salary will drop by thousands of euros and it will affect all legislators.

On Thursday, the Hungarian ruling party Tisza submitted a proposal in the parliament for a drastic reduction in the salaries of MPs, which will be only 1.8 times the current three times the average salary. Referring to the telex.hu server, the correspondent of TASR in Budapest informs about it.

From July, members of the National Assembly would have their wages reduced by an average of 2,460 euros, the average salary of a member of parliament would thus drop to 3,687 euros. According to the server, this is only the basic salary that MPs receive if they are members of any committee and do not hold any position in parliament. Tisza also intends to reduce the surcharges for various parliamentary functions.

Reduction of expenses of deputies

In addition to a general reduction in basic salaries, the proposal also includes cuts in budgets for assistants, office rent and travel expenses. The mobile phone allowance for MPs is also to be cancelled. Although telephones and mobile services will continue to be provided by the Office of the National Assembly, the cost of this service will be deducted from the MP’s salary.

The proposal also repeals a rule that, starting in 2022, allowed MPs and political factions to transfer unused parliamentary financial benefits to their parties. In the future, the Office of the National Assembly will receive them and return them to the state budget.

The goal is transparency

The aim of the legislative proposal, presented by Tiszy faction leader Andrea Bujdosó and her MP Kinga Kalázdi-Kerekes, is to limit the waste of state funds and establish more transparent rules for the functioning of the Office of the National Assembly. The change should enter into force from July 2026.
