The New Glenn launch vehicle of the American company Blue Origin exploded during a test on the launch pad. No one was injured in the incident. “Anomaly occurred during today’s static ignition of the engines,” billionaire Jeff Bezos’ company said in a short statement on the X network. Bezos wrote in his post that the cause of the explosion is being investigated. “It’s been a really tough day, but we’ll fix everything we need to and get back to flying. It’s worth it,” he added.
It was not immediately clear what damage was done to the launch pad and ground facilities, or how long it might take to repair them. The explosion occurred on the only platform that is equipped for New Glenn rocket launches.
The giant rocket, developed and operated by Blue Origin, was grounded in April after an engine malfunction put a communications satellite into the wrong orbit. It was only the third flight of the rocket, which the company wants to use to carry modules to the moon for the American space agency NASA. New Glenn went straight into space on its first flight in January 2025.
