Lula says he still dreams of making Eletrobras become a state-owned company again

The President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), stated this Friday (29) that he still dreams of making Eletrobras a state-owned company again. The president, however, criticized the conditions for this to occur: the deadline for an attempted purchase and the price that must be spent by the Executive.

“I still dream of bringing Eletrobras as a public company. But the privatization of Eletrobras was so rubbish that, during the privatization, they said that we can only buy it I don’t know how long later and that, if it’s the government, it’s three times more expensive”, said the president during a ceremony to announce Petrobras’ investments in Sergipe (SE).

In addition to Eletrobras, the president also criticized the privatization of BR Distribuidora, both carried out during the government of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). Without mentioning the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans), Lula said that there are “managers” who dismantle public companies to carry out surrender, citing the Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Sabesp), whose privatization was completed in 2024.

In a joking tone, Lula said that the president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, needs to lead the company correctly because he is the target of wear and tear due to the state-owned company’s wrong moves.

“I will never interfere in the activity of a company that has shares on the New York Stock Exchange and has a competent woman and a competent board of directors. But she has to know that, if it works out, it’s wonderful for Petrobras, if it goes wrong, it’s the president’s ass that things blow up”, declared Lula.
