In relation to residential gas, the reduction will be 1.63% in the metropolitan region and 2.8% in other areas
O vehicular natural gas (CNG) will become up to 6.4% cheaper in the state of Rio de Janeirostarting next Monday (1st). The prices of piped cooking gas and fuel for industry will also be reduced.
The relief in the consumer’s pocket is the result of an agreement between the state government, Petrobras ─ gas producer ─ and Naturgy, gas distribution concessionaire.
Already metropolitan region of Rio, the reduction will be 6.3%. In other regions of the state, 6.4%. According to government estimates, 1.5 million drivers who use gas cars will benefit from the reduction in the price of CNG.
In relation to residential gas, the reduction will be 1.63% in the metropolitan region and 2.8% in other areas. Gas for industry will fall 5.12% in the capital and surrounding areas, and 5.3% in the interior of the state and more distant regions.
The new prices were calculated by Naturgy and approved last Wednesday (27) by the Energy and Basic Sanitation Regulatory Agency of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Agenersa), a state government body.
Rio is the largest producer
A State Secretariat for Energy and Marine Economy participated in negotiations with Petrobras and the concessionaire to reach the reduction agreement.
For the secretariat, the final result is “an important stimulus for the resumption of natural gas consumption, in addition to strengthening the market and alleviating the costs of urban mobility for the population”.
A technical note from the secretariatwhich issued a favorable opinion on the agreement, highlights that Rio de Janeiro is the main CNG market in Brazil for reasons such as the fact that it is home to the largest producing basins and the granting of state benefits, such as a discount on the Motor Vehicle Ownership Tax (IPVA) for drivers with gas cars.
In 2025, the state accounted for 76.90% of all natural gas production in the country, according to the National Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels Agency (ANP), the federal regulatory body for the sector.
More production, lower price
O increasing gas production in the country is one of the priorities defended by the president of Petrobras, Magda Chambriard, since she took charge of the company, in June 2024. The executive has said that greater production is the path that will lead to a reduction in fuel prices.
On the 12th, when I detailed the company’s quarterly balance sheet to journaliststhe president recalled that, upon taking office, the company “placed” 29 million cubic meters (m³) of gas per day on the market, and currently the volume is 50 million to 52 million cubic meters.
“What lowers the price of gas is investing to produce more, because they have not yet repealed the law of supply and demand. Until they repeal the law of supply and demand, the more gas, the lower the price”, declared Chambriard.
