Three Latvian climbers died this week after falling while climbing the highest mountain in the United States, Mount McKinley (Denali). One person from the group of seven was injured and is in critical condition. TASR writes about it according to the AP agency. The climbers fell on Wednesday near the Denal pass, which is located at an altitude of 5550 meters above sea level. The peak of McKinley is at an altitude of 6190 meters.
According to information from the US National Park Service, climbers fell while traversing a route called the West Buttress, known for its ice cracks, steep ice sections and exposed ridges, where many accidents and deaths have already occurred.
Rescuers had to wait until Friday for the weather to improve before trying to reach the climbers. The bodies of the deceased have not yet been found. A total of 130 people have already died while climbing Mount McKinley, most during the descents. 1,000 to 1,200 climbers go to the top every year, especially in May and June. The climb takes about 17 hours, and last year only about half of the braves completed it.
