US government rows back as it tightens the green card

Washington – After a wave of public outrage, the US government has weakened its plans to restrict access to the permanent residency permit known as the green card. The US Secretary of Homeland Security told the New York Times on Friday that the new regulation, according to which green cards can only be applied for from abroad, will ultimately not apply to all applicants. The rule should be applied “on a case-by-case basis.”
