An accident involving a passenger van and a truck left 16 dead and five injured on Sunday afternoon (31), on BR-116, in Santa Terezinha, in the interior of Bahia.

Preliminary information indicates that the van was transporting members of the same family and was heading from Amargosa to Salvador, returning from a family get-together. The truck was already traveling between Juazeiro, in Bahia, and the state of Rio de Janeiro.

According to initial surveys by the PRF and the Civil Police, the truck would have invaded the opposite lane and collided head-on with the van. The exact circumstances of the accident are still being investigated by authorities.

Victims

Teams from the 16th Military Fire Brigade (BBM), based in Santo Antônio de Jesus, responded to the incident with four vehicles. Firefighters removed eight bodies that were stuck to the wreckage of the vehicles, and among the victims are the Sergeant Manuel Oliveira dos Santos, his wife and daughter.

The Technical Police Department reported that removed the 16 fatal victims from the scene of the accident. The investigation was carried out by the Regional Technical Police Coordination of Santo Antônio de Jesus.

To speed up procedures, seven bodies are being examined in Santo Antônio de Jesus and another nine were sent to Feira de Santana. After completing the examinations and identifying the victims, all releases will be carried out by the Legal Medical Institute (IML) of Salvador.

Truck showed irregularity

The truck driver remains hospitalized under medical care. The Civil Police opened an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident.

During the inspection carried out after the collision, the PRF found that the cronotacógrafo (equipment that records speed, driving time and distance covered) of the truck was irregular operation, which made it impossible to prove how long the driver had been driving.

According to the PRF, the track was completely reopened at 3:47 am this Monday (1st), after completing the incident response and road cleaning procedures. Investigations into the causes of the accident are ongoing.
