Several European countries joined the cross-border operation to dismantle the smuggling network.

In recent weeks, Hungarian authorities have seized a record amount of cocaine as part of an international police operation. They discovered 522 kilograms of this drug in a shipment of bananas from South America. According to the hang.hu server, Máté Csupor, the head of the Hungarian Office for Drug Crime of the National Investigation Office of the Emergency Police (KR NNI), stated this at a press conference on Tuesday.

Record contraband

According to Csupor, the value of contraband on the black market reaches 15 billion forints (42.3 million euros).

The shipment originating from Ecuador was headed to Hungary via Germany. Hungarian authorities received information about the suspicious container in November 2025 from the French customs administration.

The route of the drug shipment

The containers arrived last November 17 at the German port of Bremen, from where part of the cargo continued by train to Hungary and part by truck to Romania.

In addition to the Hungarian police and the National Office for Taxes and Customs (NAV), partner security forces from Slovakia, Germany and the Czech Republic were intensively involved in the cross-border operation aimed at breaking up the smuggling network.
