Eduardo Bolsonaro proposes replacing Pix with a US system

Former deputy suggests exchange in negotiations with the USA after report criticizing Brazilian payments and announcing tariffs

(PL), a former federal deputy, suggested that Brazil replace Pix with Zelle, a North American payment system. The statement was made this Wednesday (June 3, 2026) in an interview with the portal TMC News. The proposal comes after the USTR (Office of the United States Trade Representative) criticized the Brazilian system and announced new tariffs on products from the country.

Eduardo stated that changing the payment system could be part of a broader negotiation between Brazil and the North American government. “The United States has mechanisms very similar to Pix, such as Zelle, which is the United States’ Pix. So you can go to a negotiation table with Americans with good arguments”said Eduardo.

The former deputy also said that the economies of the two countries are “complement” and that “you can sit down, you can negotiate”. Eduardo cites as an example the mutual interest in rare earths and manganese. “THEThe United States imports 100% of manganese.” And Brazil is a large producer”he stated.

Zelle has limited reach compared to the Brazilian system, because it is not accepted by all banks in the United States. Furthermore, financial compensation on Zelle takes minutes, while on Pix, compensation is instantaneous.

The suggestion responds to a USTR investigation. The body concluded that Brazil adopts “countless unfair practices” linked to trade.

The report recommended the application of Brazilian products. According to the USTR, Brazil maintains electronic payment policies that “disadvantage American companies involved in digital commerce or electronic payment services”.
