French president announces coordination mechanism with the US to monitor agreement
The president of France, (Renaissance, center), said this Thursday (June 4, 2026) that the country will support the ceasefire in Lebanon and that it is available to help implement the measure. The statement was made during an official visit to Montenegro.
The statement came after the announcement of an agreement in Washington (USA), mediated by the North American government, between Israel and Lebanon.
“We support the ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel and everything that contributes to restoring peace, combating terrorist activities and fully establishing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Lebanon”Macron declared to journalists.
According to the French newspaper Macron stated that France is “naturally, as he has always been, available to move forward on this path” and which was implemented “a coordination mechanism in which the United States and France work together”.
The agreement established in Washington allows for a ceasefire conditional on the suspension of Hezbollah attacks against Israel. The Iranian-backed extremist group, however, did not participate in the negotiations. The organization’s leader, Naim Qassem, rejected the terms following the announcement.
In , the French government called on all parties involved to implement the terms as quickly as possible:
“Hezbollah must cease its operations, withdraw from the southern sector of Litani and give way to the Lebanese Armed Forces, the only forces that can legitimately guarantee the sovereignty of the Lebanese State over its entire territory. The Israeli army must cease its operations and begin its withdrawal from Lebanese territory.”
