Magnitude 7.8 earthquake hits area near southern Philippines

A 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck an area near the southern coast of the Philippines this Monday (8) and generated regional tsunami warnings, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The earthquake had its epicenter at sea, 35 kilometers deep, near the southern island of Mindanao, according to the USGS.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of possible waves “over the next three hours” along the coasts of the Philippines, Indonesia, Palau, Taiwan and Papua New Guinea.
