Israel has launched almost 3,500 attacks on Lebanon since the conclusion of the ceasefire, according to Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The prime minister describes many villages as simply razed to the ground.
Israel has carried out nearly 3,500 airstrikes on Lebanon since April 16 and carried out hundreds of controlled explosions. Lebanese Prime Minister Nawáf Salam announced this on Monday, writes TASR according to the Reuters agency.
A cease-fire brokered by the United States took effect just after midnight on April 17, with Israeli troops still deep in southern Lebanon. Although the ceasefire has largely halted airstrikes on Beirut and its suburbs, fighting continues in southern Lebanon between Israel and the pro-Iranian militant group Hezbollah.
More demolitions of villages
Comments released by Salam’s office after the cabinet meeting on Network X show that between April 17 and June 7, Israel carried out 3,491 airstrikes, 407 controlled demolitions and six “extermination” operations, demolitions that completely leveled some villages in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli military did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Waves of population displacement
Lebanon’s prime minister said his country was trying to reach a ceasefire, but the latest escalation in tensions between Iran and Israel has caused further waves of displacement, straining Lebanon’s ability to take in refugee families.
The country was drawn into the Middle East conflict on March 2 when Hezbollah fired rockets into northern Israel. Since then, Israeli attacks and calls for evacuation have displaced more than a million people, representing a fifth of the population, according to Reuters.
Continued shelling
Hezbollah continues to shell Israel and has rejected US-brokered talks between Lebanese and Israeli officials aimed at concluding a permanent ceasefire agreement.
Israel attacked the southern suburbs of Beirut on Sunday in retaliation for Hezbollah’s fire on northern Israel, Reuters reminds. In response, Tehran bombed northern Israel, which in turn fired back at various locations in Iran.
