In a 40-minute conversation, the presidents of Brazil and Mexico defended the end of the embargo on Cuba and supported Bachelet at the UN
The president (PT) and the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum (Morena, left), spoke via videoconference this Wednesday (June 10, 2026). The 2 leaders on trade and on a possible agreement between Petrobras and Pemex (Petróleos Mexicanos), a state-owned mixed economy company in Mexico.
The conversation lasted 40 minutes and was attended by foreign ministers Mauro Vieira, from Brazil, and Roberto Velasco, from Mexico.
In a statement, the Brazilian government highlighted the visits and meetings related to the energy cooperation agenda. According to the statement, the collaboration ranges from cooperation in biofuels to a “possible signature of an instrument” between Pemex and Petrobras.
Lula and Sheinbaum agreed to deepen conversations to review and update the bilateral commercial legal framework between the 2 countries.
SUPPORT CUBA
Lula and Sheinbaum confirmed their position in favor of ending the US embargo on Cuba.
“The 2 representatives confirmed their position in favor of ending the embargo on Cuba and shared their concern about the serious humanitarian situation in the Caribbean country”the government wrote in a note.
UN AND BILATERAL MEETING
The presidents also reiterated the support of Mexico and Brazil for the candidacy of Michelle Bachelet, former president of Chile from 2006 to 2010 and 2014 to 2018, for the position of next Secretary-General of the United Nations.
The 2 representatives instructed their chancelleries to hold, on a near date, the 6th Meeting of the Mexico-Brazil Binational Commission. This is the main bilateral mechanism for political dialogue and cooperation between the 2 countries, with the aim of implementing the different initiatives discussed.
WORLD CUP 2026
At the end of the video conference, Lula wished Sheinbaum success in holding the 2026 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, one of the 3 host countries of the tournament, which begins in Mexico City this Thursday (June 11), in the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, at 4pm (Brasília time). Earlier, Lula suggested that those in Mexico City have external interference.
