As soon as he enters the field this Saturday (13), against Morocco, Alisson will put his name on a shelf where there are only Gilmar and Taffarel, the only goalkeepers to defend Brazil in three World Cups as a starter.
But the gaucho from Novo Hamburgo doesn’t want to be recognized just for his participation in the tournament, but rather for joining another even more select group, of players who won the world title.
In his case, in particular, the title could also help him, finally, put in the past the criticism that accompanies him for his performances in the decisive moments that marked Brazil’s eliminations in the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, respectively, against Belgium and Croatia.
“Being able to be in a group with these giants of history [Gilmar e Taffarel] It’s a privilege,” said the Brazilian goalkeeper. “But I also want to be in another group. I want to be among the world champions. That’s my focus and the most important thing at the moment,” he added.
Considered one of the leaders of the squad, the 33-year-old goalkeeper recognizes that Brazil are not the biggest favorites in this edition. The team would be behind countries like France, Spain and Argentina in this regard. For him, however, this could precisely be an advantage for the Brazilian team.
“It’s good that the team arrives a little questioned, because it was like that in other good moments too”, he stated, before remembering the turbulent moment experienced by the team throughout the period leading up to the 2026 World Cup, with changes of coaches, in addition to the institutional crisis at the CBF.
“It is undeniable that the last one was very difficult for all the players. We feel closely the difficulties we had due to several factors. But the most important thing is the moment now. That is what matters. It is the moment that the team will reach to play the first game. And, if it is God’s will, to reach the final. That is why it is said to be”, he commented.
