Wilton Sampaio appeals to VAR to send off 2nd South African player

A South Africa’s debut against Mexico took on even more dramatic tones in the final minutes of the match. At 36 minutes into the second half, when they were already losing 2-0 and had one player less, the VAR called Wilton Pereira Sampaio to review a possible aggression.

Shirt number 11 Zwane was punished by expulsion after hitting Alvarado in the face outside the ball dispute.

Steering wheel had already been expelled

Midfielder Sithole was the first to be expelled from the World Cup in 2026. The number 13 received a red card after fouling Brian Gutiérrez, from Mexico.

Four minutes into the second half, the Mexican midfielder was released and carried the ball to the edge of the area. Sithole was the last man, and ended up tangling with his opponent.

Referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio signaled the foul and sent off the South African player as it was a clear chance to score.

On the charge, Raúl Jiménez charged over the barrier. Gallardo even tried to take advantage of the rebound, but sent it out with no danger of scoring.
