Negotiations took place again on Friday: the representatives of the three coalition parties met to take a step forward with the planned reform of the military service. Recently the situation was quite messy. The ÖVP has made the Military Service Commission’s preferred proposal its own and increased the pressure to implement variant 8 plus 2: This would mean extending basic military service from the current six to eight months and supplementing it with mandatory militia exercises of two months. At the same time, community service should be extended from nine to twelve months.
