The Ministry of Labor and Employment (MTE) rescued an elderly managed 84, who lived for more than 20 years in conditions similar to slavery on a property located in the rural area of Guarapuava, Paraná. The man lived with his wife, aged 66, in an old wooden warehouse. They were taken to the home of one of the children.
According to information from the ministry, the inspection carried out at the site found that the elderly man wasthere remained services without registration of the employment relationship. It was also identified that the man received remuneration below the minimum region of rural workers. Furthermore, the audit detected salary delays and the non-payment of vacation and 13th salary.
The inspection also found that the couple lived in degrading conditions. The adapted warehouse had serious structural problemssuch as deteriorated floors, cracks in walls, improvised electrical installations and risk of collapse. The bathroom was an improvised structure, without an adequate drainage system, and with exposed electrical wiring in the bathing area. Water for consumption was collected through improvised installations.
Furthermore, the inspection identified that the improvised housing represented imminent risk to the safety of residents. At the site, combustible materials were stored close to the wood stove and there was an inadequate installation of a gas cylinder inside the storeroom.

Cases of conditions similar to slavery can be reported through the Ministry of Labor and Employment tool. The department also receives complaints through the Regional Labor Superintendencies and the Labor Inspection.
