This tree looks like an exotic holiday. At the same time, it is also growing in the Czech Republic without problems

At first glance, it resembles a tree that you would expect to see in southern Europe or in an exotic botanical garden. However, catalpa thrives surprisingly well even in Czech conditions, which is why it is increasingly appearing in gardens and parks.

Some trees can catch your eye at first glance, and the catalpa is undoubtedly one of them. Its huge heart-shaped leaves, rich flowers and later long pod-like fruits give it an appearance that is different from the usual woody plants of our gardens. Nevertheless, it is not a delicate exotic. If you give it a suitable place, it can become a prominent feature of your garden, even for many decades.

A tree that cannot be missed

The catalpa attracts the most attention with its leaves. These can grow to surprising sizes and form a dense crown that provides pleasant shade during hot summer days. It is therefore not surprising that it earned the nickname natural parasol.

In addition, during the flowering period, the tree literally blooms with many striking and delicate decorations. These resemble the flowers of some tropical plants and give the tree an extremely decorative look. The combination of large leaves and exotic-looking flowers is the reason why many people fall in love with catalpa at first sight.

Also interesting are the long, narrow fruits, which often remain on the tree even during the winter. They resemble green or brown strings suspended between the branches and give the tree an unmistakable character for much of the year.

Why does it also thrive in Czech gardens?

Although the catalpa comes from warmer regions, it can adapt well to our mild climate. It thrives best in a sunny location protected from strong winds. But once it takes root and grows stronger, it can handle normal Czech winters without major problems.

Hers is also a big advantage for maintenance. It doesn’t need complex care or regular intervention, and it usually gets by with just an occasional cut and enough space to grow. Thanks to its dense crown, it is also popular in places intended for rest, where it creates pleasant shading during the warmest months.
