The Democratic mayor of New York, Zohran Mamdani, spoke about Brazil in the World Cup in a video published this Saturday (13), the day of the team’s debut against Morocco, at 7 pm (Brasília time). The politician praised former player Sócrates, a Corinthians idol who played in the 1982 World Cup.
“As we wait for Brazil against Morocco, I’ve been thinking lately about Sócrates, not the ancient Greek philosopher, but the maestro of the Brazilian midfield. Sócrates played for both Brazil and the Seleção in the 1970s and 1980s. Including the 1982 World Cup, where he captained the team. They were difficult years in Brazil,” he said.
The mayor, an opponent of American President Donald Trump, also cited the dictatorship in Brazil and the Corinthians Democracy – a historic movement in Brazilian football where Corinthians players took control of the club’s decisions.
“A repressive military junta governed the country, imposing its rule by force. At Corinthians, the club he captained, Sócrates and his teammates participated in what ordinary Brazilians dreamed of: democracy,” he added.
Mamdani also played with the Brazilian and Moroccan fans. “If you’re supporting Brazil, enjoy a coxinha at Bar Goiano, and if you’re supporting the Atlas Lions, head to Tatara Kitchen for a delicious dish.”
The Brazilian team, led by coach Carlo Ancelotti, in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Globo, SBT, SporTV, CazéTV, ge tv and N Sports broadcast the match.
