Switzerland: Referendum - landmark for immigration and population, why the EU is worried

Crucial today, Sunday 14/6 in Switzerland.

Swiss voters go to the polls today to decide whether to impose a cap on the country’s population.

The right-wing Swiss People’s Party (SVP), its largest political party, seeks to limit and reduce the population to 10 million by 2050.

Switzerland currently has approximately 9.1 million inhabitants. If this initiative is adopted, asylum and family reunification will be limited once the population reaches 9.5 million. This is likely to happen in the 2030s.

The referendum that can change Switzerland-EU relations

If these measures prove insufficient, Switzerland will have to end its free movement agreement with the European Union.

The majority of Swiss voters make use of the possibility to vote by mail. The polling stations open for only a few hours and close at 12.00 noon (local time, 13.00 Greek time) while the first results are expected in the afternoon.

What do the polls show?

For most of the election campaign, polls suggested that voters overwhelmingly supported the proposal on the referendum.

However, the gallops of recent weeks reflect a change in mood, suggesting an ambiguous battle.
