Total deaths in Gaza exceed 73,000 amid Israeli attacks, despite ceasefire

The war has displaced most of the Palestinian population of more than 2 million people, left large parts of the territory in rubble and created shortages of food, medicine and other basic supplies.

The number of Palestinian deaths in the war between Israel and Hamas exceeded 73 thousand, the Gaza Ministry of Health reported this Sunday, 14. Israel continued to carry out attacks within the territory despite the agreement reached in October, under the justification that it carries out actions against Hamas and other militants who pose a threat, and in response to violations of the ceasefire, including occasional attacks. Five Israeli soldiers have died since the truce.

According to the ministry, more than 173,200 people have been injured since the start of the war, which was started by the Hamas-led attack on October 7, 2023 against Israel. This attack resulted in the deaths of around 1,200 people and the capture of another 251 as hostages.

The health ministry, part of the Hamas-led government, is staffed by medical professionals and maintains detailed records considered reliable by United Nations agencies and independent experts. The body does not distinguish between civilians and militants, but says women and children make up about half of all fatalities.

Israel says it tries to avoid harm to civilians and blames their deaths on Hamas on the grounds that the militants operate in densely populated areas.

The war has displaced most of the Palestinian population of more than 2 million people, left large parts of the territory in rubble and created shortages of food, medicine and other basic supplies as border crossings with Gaza – all but one controlled by Israel – were closed.
