Vacationers in Croatia were stunned: They came to Makarska and… they didn’t expect THIS in their wildest dreams!

The holiday season is just starting, but the beaches in Makarska are already full of tourists like in the middle of summer. Visitors who arrived here were in for an unpleasant surprise. For the third season in a row, construction work continues on the green zone in the city centerwrites the portal

Locals and tourists alike are voicing their displeasure as they expected the project to be completed before the start of summer. There are still fences, construction equipment and piles of material near the beach. After the demolition of around a hundred mostly illegal and retrofitted hospitality and business buildings, Makarska is still looking forward to a modern recreation area at this location.

“It’s going slowly, I don’t know what the problem is, but it’s ugly for tourists. They always say it will be finished, it will be open. I read that it should be in May, but whatever, it is the way it is,” said Janja, a resident of Makarska.

Vacationers who relied on the original information about the completion date are similarly disappointed. “We read in the Czech Republic that it will be open in June. I thought it would be like that, but as I can see, it is not,” complained the vacationer.

Slovak policemen in Croatia

The Adriatic Sea is still one of the most popular destinations for Slovaks, which is why there will be no shortage of Slovak policemen there even during this year’s summer tourist season. They will help SR citizens in solving situations arising during the holidays. Their deployment is based on long-term cooperation between Slovakia and the Republic of Croatia in the field of safety and protection of tourists.

“A total of eight members of the Police Force will take turns in two shifts in Croatia. The first group will operate from July 1 to July 31, 2026, the second group from August 1 to August 28, 2026. In each shift, four Slovak police officers will be working in the field, who will be divided between two main areas of operation,” explained Roman Hájek, spokesman for the Presidium of the Police Force.

The patrol that will serve in Crikvenica will be in charge of the area of the Primorsko-Goranské coast. The patrol that will serve in Trogir will be in charge of the Split-Dalmatia region. According to the spokesperson, Slovak police officers will be easily identifiable in the field by their service uniforms and will provide cooperation to their Croatian colleagues.

“The task of the joint patrols will be to provide assistance to Slovak citizens in various situations that may arise during their stay abroad, especially in the case of traffic accidents, solving offences, loss or theft of documents, disruption of public order, as well as when searching for missing persons or when language and communication support is needed,” added Hájek.

The project is part of the international initiative “Safe Tourist Destination”, which the Croatian police has been implementing since 2006. The police force joined the project for the first time in 2008, while the year 2026 represents the 19th involvement of the Slovak Republic in this form of international police cooperation.

“Long-term cooperation brings positive results in the area of safety and comfort of Slovak tourists, it improves communication between citizens and security forces and contributes to a smoother solution to situations that arise directly in the field,” the spokesman added.
