Hungary shields itself against Orbán with a maneuver to prevent his return: at least in the next eight years

The Hungarian National Assembly has approved limiting the prime minister’s term to eight years. This measure is key, since it will prevent and was part of the electoral campaign promises of the conservative Chief Executive, Peter Magyar.

The proposal, an amendment to the fundamental law promoted by the ruling Tisza party, has been approved by the National Assembly with 135 votes in favor, 50 against and six abstentions. Likewise, the measure is retroactive, since the period is calculated from 1990, according to Hungarian media.

“Whoever has held the position of prime minister for a total of at least eight years, including interruptions, may not be elected to said position. To calculate this eight-year period, the prime minister’s mandate as of May 2, 1990 will be taken into account,” the voted text states.

Orbán achieved re-election with the leader of his party

The approval of this historic measure for Hungarians comes after the leader of the Hungarian party Fidesz despite his historic electoral defeat against Magyar. The former prime minister, a faithful ally of Vladimir Putin, recently described his rival as “viceroy” at the service of Western interests.

Orbán announced last April that he intends to “radically” restore his party. “Right now they don’t need me in Parliament, but in the renewal of the national side,” he explained then in a message on his social networks.

In this way, he recalled that he has been leading the party for almost four decades, with successes and failures, but it continues to be “the most united political community in the country” and that H

The deputies also debated this Monday about the plans of the previous Executive to establish a migrant camp in western Hungary, which has produced friction between the Hungarian Prime Minister and the deputy Bence Rétvári.

“You all agreed with Viktor Orbán’s proposal to build a migrant camp near the Austrian border, 3-4 kilometers from the Vitnyéd settlement, on the site of the former dairy school, which was once called the Mecca of the Hungarian dairy industry,” Magyar said during the debate, addressing Fidesz deputies.
