Emam Ashour’s name gained prominence this Monday (15) when he scored Egypt’s first goal in the 2026 World Cup, against Belgium, in Seattle. Off the field, however, the midfielder has a controversial history, as he was already convicted by the Egyptian courts after being involved in an attack on a head of security at a shopping mall in the Cairo region.
The case occurred in Sheikh Zayed, a municipality in the metropolitan area of the Egyptian capital. At the time, Ashour was filmed arguing and exchanging shoves with the establishment’s security staff. The images recorded moments of tension in the parking lot and ended with one of those involved falling to the ground.
The player’s defense claimed that there was just general confusion and denied deliberate aggression. According to the version presented by Ashour, he went to the mall after being informed by his wife, Yasmine Hafez, that she had suffered harassment and had not received assistance from the security team.
At first, the court acquitted the athlete. The case, however, was analyzed again after an appeal by the prosecutor, who maintained that the employee had been attacked and suffered injuries during the episode. In November 2024, the midfielder was sentenced to six months in prison.
The sentence was never carried out. The parties later reached a financial agreement, which closed the case and prevented the player from being arrested.
