chancellor says end of war includes Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon, says TV

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, said on Tuesday (16) that the end of the war involving the country includes Israel’s withdrawal from occupied areas in Lebanon, according to Iranian state TV, following the announcement of a provisional peace agreement between Iran and the United States.

According to the broadcaster, Araghchi made the comment at a briefing with foreign diplomats. The TV did not show the statements on video, but reproduced them on a strip on the screen.

“The end of the war in Lebanon is an inseparable part of the complete end of the war,” Araghchi was quoted as saying. “Without the withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territories they occupied during this war, the war has not fully come to an end.”

He added that further Israeli attacks on Lebanon “will be considered by us to be a violation of the Memorandum of Understanding” with the US.

The content of the interim agreement is still unclear, as it has not yet been publicly released in full.
