Moraes gives Bolsonaro 24 hours to explain seized weapon – 06/16/2026 – Politics

The minister of the (Supreme Federal Court) gave 24 hours for the former president’s defense to comment on one this Monday (15) during a blitz in the Federal District.

Moraes wants to know “the reason why the convict kept a firearm at home, with a spare magazine” and why, on the eve of the end of the period of his house arrest, scheduled for the 25th, he requested a repair to the weapon.

The Glock pistol, 9 millimeter caliber, was in the possession of military officer Estácio Leite da Silva Filho, who is part of Bolsonaro’s security team, according to a record made with the STF. The soldier presented himself to the police as a member of the (Institutional Security Office) of the Presidency of the Republic, which the body denies.

Estácio was taken to a police station and reported that he was taking the gun for repairs due to a breakdown, and that he intended to return it this Tuesday (16). The Brazilian Army’s Sigma system proved that the pistol belonged to the former president.

Moraes ordered the PM battalion responsible for security measures at Bolsonaro’s home to clarify whether inspection procedures are being carried out on cars leaving the former president’s condominium.

The PM responded to Moraes that it is fulfilling its duties by scanning the cabins and trunks of vehicles leaving Bolsonaro’s residence, but that the cars used by the GSI are parked on public roads and do not enter the garage, “which is why they are not subject to inspections.”

Bolsonaro’s defense and the military were contacted by the report, but have not yet commented.

When narrating the approach during the blitz, military police officer Davi Evangelista Alves stated that the pistol was on the floor of the car — an official vehicle of the Presidency of the Republic — and that “the driver, suddenly, closed the window”.

Estácio also initially said that the weapon “was part of his functionality”, but the police officer claims that his documentation did not contain this record. When asked again, he replied that the pistol belonged to Bolsonaro and that the equipment was inside the car.

In the statement attached to the process that deals with the ex-president’s sentence, the military officer states that he “immediately informed” that the weapon belonged to Bolsonaro and that the pistol was given to him “due to the discovery of a breakdown, which, according to him, appeared to be an easy solution.”

In a statement, the PM said that “a Brazilian Army soldier who was driving an official vehicle was taken to the 21st Police Station after being found, in addition to the institutional weapon regularly carried, a second firearm inside the vehicle.”

“During the incident, the person approached reported that he did not have documentation for the second weapon and declared that the weapon belonged to a third party. Given the facts, the weapon and the driver were taken to the 21st DP”, the note continues. The blitz took place in Taguatinga, administrative region of the DF.

The GSI claims that Estácio never worked at the agency during the Lula (PT) government. The GSI says that it is not responsible for the security of former presidents of the Republic, which includes Bolsonaro, and that the employees available to former representatives are chosen and appointed by them.

Bolsonaro has been in hospital since March 27th, after being admitted to a hospital for two weeks, with injuries in both lungs. He is serving a sentence of 27 years and three months in prison for leading a coup plot in the country.
