The Public Ministry of Pará filed a public civil action with the Court in which it points to the former mayor of Ananindeua and candidate for state government as responsible for the illegal deforestation of areas and says that he used an “environmental scam” to avoid paying a million-dollar fine.
According to the Public Ministry, Daniel owns a farm in Ipixuna do Pará that had illegal deforestation of 749.52 hectares of primary vegetation, being in a legal reserve area and part in a permanent preservation area (APP). The fines are almost R$4.7 million.
The Public Ministry also states that in August 2025, after inspection operations, the farm’s property registration was changed, with Daniel’s ownership being transferred to local businessman Kleyton Oliveira de Abreu.
In the accusation presented to the Court, prosecutor Igor Dantas describes Abreu as Daniel’s “environmental orange”.
Judge Francisco Walter Rêgo Batista, from the Single Court of Ipixuna do Pará, ordered Dr. Daniel to be cited in a decision on June 2nd, granting ten days for the government candidate to respond to the accusations.
Daniel is a former ally of the Barbalho family, but broke with the clan, led by former governor Helder Barbalho (MDB). He should be the main opponent of the current governor, Hana Ghassan (MDB), candidate for re-election.

Dr. Daniel’s press office stated that the action from the Public Ministry of Pará has not yet been received by the courts. “The episode once again proves the shameful political persecution against the Barbalho’s opponents,” he said. The command of the Public Ministry of Pará is appointed by the state government.
“So far, the magistrate has rejected requests made by the accusing body and has only opened a deadline for the defense to demonstrate, which is certain of its good conduct and will prove this in court”, states the note.
The pre-candidate also adds that he “regrets that a relevant newspaper like Folha de S.Paulo be used, just a few months before the election, as a political instrument for their opponents”.
