Smoke around Samir Xaud

The topic that dominates the scenes of Brazilian football at the moment is the smoke that surrounds the president of the CBF, Samir Xaud.

Marital betrayal, in itself, can be treated as “his and his family’s issue”. The problem is that when you hold such an exposed position, the equation changes completely.

The public exposure, the use of the entity’s structure and the timing (precisely in the spotlight of preparation for the World Cup) transform the case into a reputational scar that is difficult to disguise.

There are those who say that internal support, for now, remains firm. It might even be true. However, brands of this type tend to be long-lasting. They weaken authority, fuel distrust and make it much more difficult for the leader to be seen as an example by players, clubs and sponsors.

In football, image is not a luxury — it is an asset. And stories like this often leave longer aftereffects than they seem in the heat of the moment.

The uncomfortable truth is that the life of a CBF president is never 100% private. The position carries an inevitable public dimension. When personal life becomes a spectacle, the price to be paid is usually high.

Brazil has a well-known history in this football “liturgy”: top-hatted emotional scandals are almost never restricted to the family sphere. From Havelange onwards, the explosive mix of power, money and personal life always had negative repercussions.

And, as if the personal turmoil wasn’t enough, the case rekindles deeper questions about governance, transparency and conduct in the management of Brazilian football’s highest entity — precisely at a time when the country most needs stability and credibility.

Hard life at the top.

Until next time.
