PF returns to the National Archives imperial documents that would be auctioned

Among those rescued are documents from 1824, 1865 and 1876; pieces were evaluated by a technical team, which recognized the origin

On Wednesday (June 17, 2026), the (Federal Police) returned to the collection historical documents of a public nature from the time of the Brazilian Empire, which had been identified in lots announced at auction.

Among the assets returned is a document dated 1876, signed by Duque de Caxias, patron of the Brazilian Army, and another by José Thomaz Nabuco Filho, father of abolitionist Joaquim Nabuco, dated 1865.

The pieces were evaluated by a technical team from the National Archives, which recognized the provenance and public destination, prohibiting commercialization, with precautions for the items for the purpose of preserving Brazilian historical heritage. The report describes documents from 1824, 1865 and 1876 originating from public offices.

Among the documents returned is a set from 1876, related to the Ministry of War Affairs. One of the pages is dated September 25, 1876 and signed by Duque de Caxias, who headed the ministry at the time. The document deals with official information regarding the inauguration of communication between Paraíba and Pernambuco.

In the same set, there is also a piece dated June 27, 1876, from the State Secretariat for War Affairs, signed by José Maria Lopes da Costa, related to the forwarding of the Collection of Laws of the Province of Paraíba.

The PF also restored a historical document dated 1824, signed by the commander and lieutenant colonel Simplício José da Silva. The item originated at the Temporary Government Board of the Province of Piauí and deals with a communication related to the Emperor’s decision on strict punishment for those who offend the government.

The other document dated 1865, signed by José Thomaz Nabuco de Araújo Filho, then Minister of Justice. The play has ministerial origins and addresses a topic related to the Imperial National Guard, an institution of great relevance to the political-administrative and military organization of the Empire.

With the restitution, the documents return to the custody of the National Archives, in Rio de Janeiro, the body responsible for the preservation, technical treatment and access to federal public documentary heritage, ensuring conservation and appropriate destination for the historical and cultural interest of Brazilian society.
