Switzerland’s effort to secure airspace over the Alpine summit resulted in a software meltdown that grounded dozens of civilian aircraft in Zurich. The Swiss radars failed to process new data about the prohibited zone over Bürgenstock, where the USA is negotiating with Iran, all at once.
A technical glitch in the air traffic control system caused by security measures introduced during talks between Iran and the United States in Switzerland disrupted traffic at Zurich airport on Sunday. This was reported by the Reuters agency with reference to the aviation authorities, according to which the problem has already been resolved, reports TASR.
- A technical malfunction in air traffic control disrupted traffic at Zurich Airport on Sunday.
- The malfunction was related to the introduction of a no-fly zone over the Bürgenstock mountain resort.
- The incident led to the cancellation of dozens of flights and delays to other connections.
- In Bürgenstock, the American and Iranian delegations are negotiating to end the war.
Dozens of canceled flights
In the morning, 12 arrivals and 14 departures were canceled and 60 other flights were delayed, an airport spokeswoman told Reuters.
The malfunction occurred after a no-fly zone over Bürgenstock, the Swiss mountain resort where negotiations are underway, was integrated into radar imaging systems, Swiss air traffic control company Skyguide explained.
Operations have since returned to normal. “The systems are working without problems and safety has been ensured throughout,” Skyguide said.
Negotiations in Switzerland
In Bürgenstock, the American and Iranian delegations are negotiating the implementation of the memorandum of understanding, which is supposed to lead to the end of the war in the Middle East. US Vice President JD Vance and negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner are present. The Iranian delegation is led by the speaker of the parliament, Mohammad Báker Kálibáf, and the head of diplomacy, Abbas Arákčí, is also present. Diplomats of the intermediary states of Qatar and Pakistan are also present.
Switzerland promised both sides a “discreet and reliable environment” for negotiations. Bürgenstock is located about 50 kilometers south of Zurich Airport.
