Representatives from the United States and Iran begin this Sunday (21), in Switzerland, the first round of face-to-face negotiations since the signing of a memorandum of understanding signed last week to try to end the conflict involving the two countries.
The talks take place at a delicate moment for the ceasefire. Authorities on both sides are still monitoring the impacts of the continuity of the factor that threatens the stability built after the preliminary agreement.
A. Before the meeting, he stated that this initial stage will serve to define the structure of the negotiations and the mechanisms that should guide the next rounds of dialogue. According to the vice-president, his stay in Switzerland should only last one or two days.
On the Iranian side, the mission will be commanded by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, President of Parliament. Also participating in the meetings are Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Esmaeil Baghaei.
Representatives from Pakistan and Qatar will act as mediators in the discussions. The two countries participated in the discussions that led to the signing of the recently announced 14-point memorandum.
Although the document created a basis for dialogue, several topics remain without consensus. One of the main ones is the Iranian nuclear program, which continues to be the target of disagreements between Washington and Tehran.
Another sensitive issue is the future of the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic route for global oil transport. In the last few hours, tension between governments has increased.
The situation in Lebanon will also be at the center of the conversations. The two countries are trying to prevent new episodes of violence from compromising the understandings built so far and causing a resumption of military escalation.
The delegations’ expectation is that this first round will establish the parameters for broader negotiations in the coming weeks, while the memorandum of understanding remains in force.
