IBGE will have a climate disaster prevention platform

Singed Lab Desastres brings together geoscientific data to support managers in planning responses to extreme events

The (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics) will launch, on Tuesday (June 23, 2026), the Singed Lab Desastres platform, an initiative aimed at preventing disasters and tackling the impacts of climate change.

The platform will go into operation on July 1, 2026 and will bring together geoscientific data to support public and private managers in planning responses to extreme weather events. The initial focus is the national strategy for attention to El Niño, a phenomenon whose probability of occurrence tends to increase throughout 2026, according to IBGE.

Flood research

On the same date that Singed Lab Disaster operations begin, July 1st, IBGE will release the first results of the Special Survey on the 2024 Floods in Rio Grande do Sul. The two initiatives are part of the body’s institutional movement to expand the production of information aimed at preventing and mitigating disasters.

The president of IBGE, Marcio Pochmann, highlighted the reach of the new platform. “The Singed Lab Desastres opens a new frontier for the Brazilian State: using territorial and statistical intelligence not only to count losses, but to prevent them from happening”he stated.
