  • In Grobňa near Kremnica, a hunter shot an approximately seven-year-old bear.
  • An encounter with a bear near the hiking trail resulted in a direct attack.
  • A hunter in dire need used a legally held ball gun.

In the locality of Grobňa in the cadastral territory of the city of Kremnica on Sunday (June 21) in the morning, a hunter killed an approximately seven-year-old female bear with a legally held ball gun. The State Nature Conservation (ŠOP) of the Slovak Republic informed about this, saying that it happened after an attack by an animal that also had this year’s cub with it.

The incident took place approximately three kilometers from the village of Krahule. The collision with the beast took place according to the SOP according to the properly executed performance of hunting. The bear was located near the hiking trail together with one of this year’s cubs. “Due to the critical distance between the bear and the hunter, the animal attacked. The hunter then used his legally held ball gun in an extreme emergency and killed the bear,” said ŠOP.

Members of the emergency team monitored the wider area on the spot, but the bear cub was not found. At the same time, they took biological samples and performed the necessary measurements. According to the conservationists, the site will continue to be monitored using a camera trap. Members of the district department of the Kremnica Police Force, an investigator, a forensic technician and a veterinarian were also called to the scene.

Since it was not possible to find this year’s cub of the killed bear, the ŠOP asks the residents and visitors of the Krahúľ, Kremnica and adjacent forest areas to be more careful when moving in nature. He recommends staying on marked hiking trails, avoiding dense vegetation, and in case of spotting a bear cub, do not approach it and immediately inform the emergency team or the emergency call line 112.
