The 90-day period granted to the former president (PL) to remain under humanitarian house arrest ends on Thursday (June 25, 2026). The decision on the extension is up to Minister of the Federal Supreme Court Alexandre de Moraes, rapporteur of the case.
The former president is serving a sentence for attempting a coup d’état. Moraes granted house arrest on March 24, after 7 requests from the defense. The decision considered Bolsonaro’s health condition, which had successive medical complications in recent months, and the statement from the Attorney General’s Office.
In the March decision ( – PDF – 790 kB), Moraes said that, after the 90-day deadline, “the presence of the necessary requirements for maintaining humanitarian house arrest will be re-analyzed, including medical expertise if necessary.”
By granting house arrest, Moraes imposed restrictions on Bolsonaro. Among them, the use of electronic ankle bracelets and the prohibition of using social networks and having photos and videos published.
Bolsonaro’s health
Bolsonaro underwent surgery on his right shoulder in May. On June 5, the former president’s medical report showed hiccups in the previous 7 days.
The former first lady declared, on June 10, that Bolsonaro’s health condition worsened and his treatment needed to be reformulated.
