After signs of progress, US and Iran prepared for second day of talks in Switzerland

Negotiators from the United States and Iran begin this Monday (22) in Switzerland the second day of negotiations in search of a definitive end to the war between the two countriesafter a turbulent start due to aggressive statements by US President Donald Trump against the Iranian regime.

Mediators from Qatar and Pakistan welcomed what they called “encouraging progress” made during the talks, as Iran and the United States agreed to create mechanism to contain fighting in Lebanon. A US diplomat said progress had also been made in talks on maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz.

When Trump released a new threat to Iran on the Truth Social network, negotiations were temporarily halted. Top American negotiators in Switzerland include Vice President JD Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the president’s son-in-law. Iran is represented by Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, President of Parliament, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi.

In a joint statement, Pakistan and Qatar reported that high-level talks had ended and that technical negotiations would continue in Switzerland for the rest of the week. The parties agreed to establish a “line of communication” to ensure the safe passage of ships in the Strait of Hormuz, as well as a mechanism to end fighting between Israel and the pro-Iran militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Araghchi wrote in X that Pakistani and Qatari mediators handed over “great progress towards ending the Lebanon War” and added that the first “real test” of the negotiations would be whether the mechanism would be able to stop the fighting between Israel and Hezbollah. The White House did not comment.
