A 33-year-old man, with a history of domestic violence, died after jumping from an eighth-floor window with his youngest daughter on his lap, following a family argument. The deaths were declared at the scene during the early hours of Sunday.
The alert was given by residents of the region, who immediately called the authorities. INEM received the call at 3:10 am, and resources from the PSP, the Judiciary Police and the medical emergency teams were called.
According to , a PJ source confirmed that the incident occurred after a argument between the man and the child’s mother. During the disagreement, the woman threatened to contact her partner’s family to report his behavior.
According to information collected by authorities, when the woman took the cell phonethe man allegedly grabbed his daughter and threw himself from the eighth floor of the building.
Members of the PSP, the Volunteer Firefighters and Firefighters of Santarém, the Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicle (VMER) of Santarém and the Mobile Emergency Psychological Intervention Unit (UMIPE) were mobilized to the scene.
When rescue teams arrived, the man and child were in cardiorespiratory arrestwith the deaths confirmed on site by the VMER doctor.
The child’s mother was present at the scene when emergency services arrived and received psychological support by UMIPE of INEM.
The couple had a history of domestic violence and there were ongoing legal proceedings. Several witnesses were also identified at the scene, who reported having heard an intense argument moments before the fall.
The initial management of the incident was the responsibility of the PSP, which awaited the arrival of PJ inspectors. The investigation was subsequently transferred to the PJ’s homicide department, which is now seeking to clarify all the circumstances and the exact sequence of events.
