With Andy Burnham emerging as the favorite, the process to choose the next British Prime Minister could be resolved in the coming weeks
This triggered an internal process that will determine who will be the next leader of the political formation and, consequently, the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
The election mechanism is provided for in the party’s regulations and involves several phases, from the presentation of candidacies to the voting of members.
When does the race for leadership begin?
While the official timeline still needs to be approved by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), Starmer has expressed the intention for the nominations period to begin on July 9, after the NATO summit.
To reach the final ballot, each candidate will have to gather the support of at least 20% of Labor deputies in Parliament, which currently corresponds to 81 parliamentarians.
In addition, candidates need the support of at least 5% of the party’s local structures or three affiliated organizations, including two unions.
When does the nomination process end?
The party leadership has not yet confirmed a definitive date, but sources cited by the British press admit that the deadline could end on July 16, coinciding with the start of the parliamentary summer holidays.
Who can vote?
After the candidatures close, the choice of the new leader will be up to members of the Labor Party who have been registered for at least six months before the official announcement of the electoral calendar.
Each voter has a single vote, even if they are both an activist and a member of an affiliated union.
Voting is carried out through the preferential voting system, in which voters classify candidates in order of preference.
How is the winner determined?
To be elected, a candidate needs to obtain more than half of the valid votes.
If no competitor reaches this threshold in the first count, the candidates with the least votes are successively eliminated and their votes are redistributed according to the preferences indicated by voters, until someone exceeds 50%.
When can the new leader take office?
Keir Starmer has stated that he wants the process to be completed by the time MPs of Parliament return from holiday, scheduled for September 1st.
However, if there is only one candidate capable of gathering the necessary number of supports, the election could be decided much earlier. In this scenario, the new labor leader could take office during the month of July.
Andy Burnham emerges as favorite
Among the names proposed for succession, Andy Burnham, recently elected deputy for Makerfield, stands out. The politician has already confirmed his intention to run and is seen by several sectors of the party as .
Meanwhile, Wes Streeting, who , has announced that he will not advance to the race, opting instead to support Burnham.
Although any Labor MP can present a candidacy, only those who can gather the required number of supports will be able to proceed to the final stage of the election. According to current rules, the ballot cannot include more than five candidates.
If Andy Burnham is the only one to meet the nomination requirements, he will automatically become leader of the Labor Party and assume the role of Prime Minister without the need for a vote among members.
