An ordinary hike in the Polish mountains turned into a fierce struggle for survival in a matter of seconds. Lightning struck a woman in the Jizera Mountains in Poland, who subsequently suffered heart failure. Her fate was finally decided by the prompt reaction of the people, who immediately started reviving her.

The accident happened in the afternoon, with the mountain service receiving an emergency call shortly after half past two. Lightning struck a tourist in close proximity to the Orle mountain hut. According to the information that the mountain rescuers from the GOPR Karkonosze organization published on Facebook, the woman suffered a sudden stop of blood circulation immediately after the intervention. “Rescue teams from Szklarská Poręba and Świeradów immediately went to the scene,” they wrote in the post.
When the professional teams arrived at the scene of the incident, the witnesses of the event already intensively resuscitated the woman. The mountain service then took over the care of the patient. Thanks to the enormous efforts of witnesses and rescuers, the injured woman was finally able to successfully restore the spontaneous activity of her heart. After the arrival of the ambulance, she was handed over to paramedics, who then took her to a hospital in the city of Jelenia Góra.
Mountain rescuers highlighted the approach of nearby tourists. They did not hesitate to use the emergency equipment of the mountain hut itself, where an automatic external defibrillator (AED) was available. It was this device in combination with immediate heart massage that played a decisive role in saving human life.
As a reminder of how unpredictable and dangerous storms can be in mountain terrain, the Mountain Service released a photo of a woman’s helmet struck by lightning. This case serves as a strong warning to all hikers to never underestimate the power of nature. At the same time, he once again showed that knowledge of the basics of first aid and the courage to use a defibrillator really decide life and death.
