Lula supports PT’s own candidacy in Minas – 06/24/2026 – Brasília Hoje

President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT) indicated to PT members from Minas Gerais this Wednesday (24) the preference for the party’s own candidacy for the government of Minas Gerais. The state, which has the second most voters, is the main problem in the pre-candidacy for re-election of the President of the Republic.

Lula’s movement increases pressure on the former mayor of Contagem (MG) Marília Campos. She wants to run for a seat in the Senate, but she is also the most popular name in the party for a candidacy for local government. At this Wednesday’s meeting, Lula mentioned the former mayor.

The head of the government has demonstrated, behind the scenes, a desire to launch it in the dispute for the Minas Gerais government. Marília Campos resists the idea. PT leaders, however, find it difficult for her to reject any direct request from Lula.

“The collectively constructed understanding reaffirms a resolution decided a month ago that the Workers’ Party will present its own candidacy in Minas Gerais. The definitions on this project will be constructed in the coming days, based on dialogue between the party and political forces committed to a democratic and popular project for the state”, stated the president of the PT of Minas Gerais, state deputy Leninha, in a note released after the meeting.

She confirmed to Sheet that Lula supported the idea of his own candidacy. Asked if the candidate would be Marília Campos, the PT leader said that there is no definition so far.

Last week, the president of the PT, Edinho Silva, told journalists that the former mayor will be a candidate for the Senate. “Marília is a candidate for the Senate. This has been defined and we are very convinced that, in 2027, she will be a senator of the Republic”, declared Edinho.
